Camp Lemonnier serves as an expeditionary base for U.S. military forces providing support to ships, aircraft and personnel that ensure security throughout Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia. U.S. Navy corpsmen with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), conduct whole blood transfusions while participating in a Valkyrie training aboard Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Nov. 22, 2021. The training consisted of corpman drawing a sailor’s blood through one vein, and returning it to another vein on the opposite arm, to better understand transfusion procedures, in a controlled enviornment. The Valkyrie program was created to improve efficiency and confidence of corpsmen performing this emergency life-saving procedure on casualties within a combat environment.
